Our fall term is moving quickly towards the first reporting period on student progress. Progress reports will be sent home on November 15, with Parent-Teacher interviews following on the
18th & 19th of November.
In this October Newsletter you will learn about many great school-wide events and classroom initiatives that have improved the quality of life for others in need. Our focus on social action brings us all closer as a school community working to help others. Congratulations to our teachers and students for making a difference!
Arts and Sports are other areas that make our students shine. Read ahead for what’s to come later in the fall and winter and the amazing accomplishments of our student athletes.

Terry Fox Day
D.A. Morrison held its 14th annual Terry Fox walk on October 7th, 2010. The students, staff and members of Toronto Police Services Community Response Unit from 54 division participated in a 5 km walk in Taylor Creek Park on a beautiful fall sunny day.
Leading up to the walk many classes held fundraising events which included the sale of baked goods, books, home-made jewellery, candy-in-a-jar guessing contest and many others. Students also collected pledges from family and friends.
D.A. Morrison managed to raise an amazing
$4700.00 for the Terry Fox Foundation and cancer research.
Thank you to all the students, staff, and the D.A. Morrison community for their amazing support!
6A’s Food Drive
The students from class 6A had tremendous success with their first social action project of the school year. Students created posters and daily announcements to promote a food drive to serve our local community. The two week food drive raised over 500 items of food!
The following week 6A delivered the food to The Salvation Army, located at 107 Cedervale Avenue (Danforth and Woodbine). They participated in sorting and serving food to area residents in need of a helping hand. Our students came away from the experience feeling good about themselves, knowing they brought some joy and hope to the lives of others. As teachers we were very proud to see our students pulling together to achieve their goal. Congratulations 6A on a great job for such a worthy cause!

Character Abounds at DA
Students in all grades at D.A. Morrison demonstrate wonderful character. Each month, students at DA will be exploring character traits that contribute to an inclusive society and promote healthy peer-to-peer relationships. Teachers have been focusing on these traits during class time and students have received awards recognizing their accomplishments. Each month students are nominated by their home form teachers for these awards and the students are honoured at a special assembly produced by their peers. Visit the school to see pictures of the previous winners and watch for upcoming winners in future newsletter editions.

There will be a Remembrance Day ceremony for all members of the D.A. Morrison community on Thursday, November 11th beginning at 10:15 a.m. in the gym. There will be special performances by the Vocal Group and School Choir, the Band as well as excerpts and poetry readings by individual students. This year we will also include a wreath laying procession in respectful observance of this solemn day. We look forward to welcoming members of the Canadian Armed Forces to our assembly. The staff and students of DA warmly invite parents to attend.

REPORTING ABSENTEEISM
If a child must miss school due to illness or appointments, parents should telephone the school every day and inform the office staff of the absence before 9:00 a.m. The school safe arrival number is 416-396-3002. Please leave a message. The TDSB has in place a “Safe Arrival Policy”. If parents do not inform the school of their child’s absence by telephone, note or through a friend, we will call them at home or work. It is important to have current telephone numbers on file.
Student Lates
Punctuality is a skill we value and teach our students. It is important for all of our students to arrive on time for school ready to learn. Please ensure that your child or children are in the schoolyard before the entry bells so that they are ready to enter the school building on time for the start of classes. Students who arrive late may miss the start of a lesson and be in “catch up” situation for the rest of the day which is stressful for them. It also disrupts the learning of other students in the class who arrived on time.
Our safe arrival procedures are also affected. Students who arrive late are marked absent by the teacher and then the student must sign in at the office to confirm their presence at school. The administrative assistant must then cross-reference the sign-in sheet with the attendance. This is time consuming. If fewer students were late, we would be able to identify a missing student more quickly and efficiently. Please help us reinforce this important message. If your child will be arriving after 9:00 a.m. call the school office to inform them, and all children must still sign in at the office.
Lockdown Procedures
The Toronto District School Board’s Safe Schools policies and procedures require all schools to have two Lockdown Drills per year. These procedures, which fall under the mandate of our Safe Schools Department, support TDSB policy and procedure PR.695 SCH: School Lockdown, which can be found on the Board’s website.
In order to be prepared for potential emergencies, as we do with our fire drills, Lockdown procedures were in place on Thursday, October 20th, so that all members of our school community could practice and be familiar with these procedures. The Lockdown was preceded by discussions led by the classroom teacher regarding the potential need for a lockdown and the procedures to follow to ensure everyone’s safety. The children were aware that this was a drill. You too can play a role in helping your child understand the need for us to practice these procedures in preparation for our Lockdown exercise. You are encouraged to dialogue with your child in order to answer questions and share information that may be a natural extension to classroom discussions.
BUSKERFEST
D.A. Morrison is filled with many talented and enthusiastic music students! Many of these eager students are involved in Choir every Wednesday from 11:45-12:29 p.m. and Band every Thursday from 3:20-4:20 p.m. Both the Choir and Band members will perform at the upcoming Remembrance Day Assembly on November the 11th.
I would like to congratulate all grade 7 students who have successfully chosen and explored their musical instruments both at school and home. Keep up the good work! It has been an exciting journey. Please remind your son or daughter to practice their instruments at home on a weekly basis and fill out their weekly practice logs. Music practice logs are due once every five day cycle. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Grade 8 students have been working hard to prepare for Buskerfest. Buskerfest is a festival that will begin the first week of November into December. Come and check out some of the grade 8 students as they perform music outside the cafeteria in the foyer in small ensembles of 6 members at D.A. Morrison. Ask your son or daughter which day and time he or she will perform.
Transition time has begun for our grade 8 students. Thank you very much to the numerous parents who came out on October 18th for the Transition Evening at D.A. Morrison.
By now your grade 8 child should have brought home a copy of the CHOICES FOR NINE booklet. Please refer to this as you make plans to visit open house evenings and explore options for next year. If your child is applying to their local secondary school for the regular program, you do not need to fill out any forms until February. If your child wishes to apply to specialized programs or high schools out of area, you need to begin exploring your optional attendance options. Visiting schools allows you to understand the process better and ensure you meet deadlines for specialty school applications. These are often different than those set out for other optional attendance programs. Students and parents need to make sure they are meeting these deadlines to be considered for placement in schools outside their community.

Cross-country
The Cross Country season was short but sweet this year. Our team consisted of 17 students who showed great motivation, dedication and heart. They gave it their all in after school practices that consisted of 2-3 Km runs as well as intense hill training. On a chilly rainy day the team members competed in their first race at Ashbridges Bay where the first 200m was all sand. A notable mention goes to Dominic Greco who made it to the second round and was the only grade 6 on the team this year. We would like to congratulate all members of the Cross Country team on a job well done. Special mention to the students who made it all the way to the third round City Finals in Etobicoke: Taylor W., Jade W., Alex E. and Nasrat A.. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents who volunteered: Ms. Tanner, Ms. Butterworth, and Mr. and Mrs. Emmerson.

Girls Basketball & Boys Volleyball Teams!
Tryouts and practices have begun for the senior girls’ basketball and senior boys’ volleyball teams. The coaches are very impressed with the amount of students interested in joining these teams. If you are interested in joining any teams this year, please remember to listen for announcements.

The EYCI School council have booked a speaker event that is open to the community, including the DA Morrison community.
The title of the talk is BEATING THE ODDS. It’s about taking responsibility for personal change and growth, overcoming obstacles, facing fears and attaining goals.
Lesley Andrews is a well know Canadian singer, actress and motivational speaker. She has been hired by many prominent companies to speak. Those that have heard her know why. She suffered from low self-esteem, a learning disability, constant weight battles and more. Yet despite the obstacles, she was able to overcome them and move on. Her story is truly inspirational and it’s told in a way that engages her audience. It’s one of those talks that you attend and you know …. it can make a big difference. It’s not to be missed.
Life is predictable in that we know there will be many challenges and obstacles. How best can we overcome them and empower our children to do the same. This event is open to the community, parents, teachers and students. Pass it on to your friends and neighbours and come out to support your community. All proceeds benefit the students @ EYCI.
The event date is October 19, 2010 @ EYCI Auditorium. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. (admission $5 at the door) For more information:

Each year, Toronto Public Health offers free Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to grade 8 female students through immunization clinics in schools.
Permission forms and a fact sheet went home with students this week. If you did not receive the package, please check with your daughters, or call the school office.

It’s been a great year at DA!
School community council was involved in supporting our students in many positive
ways. This past year, they supported & funded several worthwhile endeavours:
All grade 6 students thoroughly enjoyed additional music instruction with a
percussion workshop hosted by DrumArtz thanks to school council funding. Thanks to
their generosity the students benefited from a series of completely interactive
workshops, with all classes participating in a workshop throughout the day. Students
were 'expert’ enough to finish their workshops with a group performance.

Grade 8 Graduation Award gift certificates
DA students benefit from the commitment & caring of the members of the School Council.
